Groves, Transect Walkers: Claire Turner and Dave White Work Parties 2011/2012: (Meet at 10am) Oct - Sun 2 (Taster day) Nov - Sun 6 Dec - Sun4 Jan - Sun 15 Feb - Sun 5 Mar - Sun4 Apr - Sun 1 Butterflies:25 species have been recorded on this reserve, the rarest being the Wood White for which Monkwood is a stronghold. It can be mainly found along the rides looking for its food plants, the vetches. Dingy Skipper is another notable rarity. White Admiral and Brimstone can be found in relatively high numbers. The Small Tortoiseshell, Small Copper, Small Skipper, Speckled Wood, Gatekeeper and Common Blue have all declined in numbers, this is probably largely due to the recent poor summers. However Ringlet, Peacock, Comma, Orange Tip, Meadow Brown and Large Skipper have all fared reasonably well and the total number of butterflies seen on the transect walks has increased. Occasional visitors include Silver Washed Fritillary, Marbled White, Painted Lady and Clouded Yellow.
